Missouri Jails Face Significant Mental Health Challenges
A recent survey by Missouri Appleseed, conducted with the Missouri Sheriff’s Association and Missouri Association of Counties, highlights the urgent mental health needs in jails statewide. Key findings include:
- Facilities are operating beyond capacity, caring for residents with severe mental illness and substance use disorders without adequate resources or funding.
- Individuals awaiting Department of Mental Health assessments or transfers experience average wait times of 18 months to nearly 3 years.
- 42% of jail leaders report that three-quarters of their residents face mental health challenges—well above national estimates.
- Jail administrators emphasize the need for improved facilities, medical staffing, staff training, and expanded Medicaid enrollment before release to support better reentry outcomes.
These findings underscore critical systemic gaps and the need for statewide investment and policy reform in mental health services.

Insights & Innovations
Rethinking Sleep Training Advice for New Mothers
A recent article in Psychology Today discusses how rigid sleep training methods can negatively impact new mothers’ mental health. The piece emphasizes that when prescribed sleep strategies fail, mothers often internalize the blame, leading to feelings of inadequacy and shame. Instead of questioning the methods, many women question their own capabilities, which can exacerbate postpartum depression and anxiety.
The article advocates for a more compassionate approach, encouraging mothers to redefine success in parenting by embracing flexibility and acknowledging the challenges of new motherhood.

Body Composition, Mental Health, and Lifestyle During Pregnancy
A recent narrative review published in Alcohol Research: Current Reviews examines the effectiveness of alcohol prevention iA recent study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry examined the relationships between body fat mass percentage and mental health, specifically depression and anxiety symptoms, during pregnancy.
The study found that higher body fat percentage was significantly associated with increased depression and anxiety scores. However, these effects were moderated by physical activity and diet quality. Increased physical activity was found to mitigate the impact of body fat on depression, while adherence to a high-quality diet moderated the effect on anxiety.
These findings suggest that lifestyle interventions, including regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, may improve mental health outcomes for pregnant women, particularly those with obesity.
ACOG Guidance on Postpartum Depression Treatment with Zuranolone
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has released a Clinical Practice Update to help clinicians navigate the use of zuranolone for treating postpartum depression. The update provides:
- Clear recommendations for clinical use
- Implementation considerations for practice
- Answers to common clinical scenarios
- Newly available data on zuranolone concentrations in human milk
This guidance makes it easier for obstetric and mental health providers to apply evidence-based care for patients experiencing postpartum depression.
Universal Screening for Maternal Mental Health Disorders
The Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health has released an Issue Brief on Universal Screening for Maternal Mental Health Disorders, emphasizing the importance of standardized screening protocols for all individuals who are pregnant or in the postpartum period.
Key Highlights:
- Definition of Universal Screening: The systematic administration of assessments to identify individuals at risk for maternal mental health disorders.
- Importance of Screening: Early identification can lead to timely interventions, reducing adverse outcomes for mothers and infants.
- Positive Screen ≠ Diagnosis: A positive screening result indicates the need for further evaluation by a healthcare professional.
